Being a recent addition to National Day, this one began in 2009, by Starr Valentina who believed that good things happen when people help each other and come together as a community. There have now been over 500 proclamations for Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day from across the USA and Canada.
Communities have been replaced with networks in which you keep in touch with your friends and family through Facebook, Instagram, and texts. This actually disconnects us from the people we actually have in our everyday lives.
I think technology has enhanced our lives in many ways, and in other ways, it has made it worse. I think we lack the motivation to get to know those in our own neighborhood because we feel as if we’re communicating constantly on-line.
So get out there and do something good for your neighbor. Get to know them, take over some cookies to share, help the old lady next door take out her garbage can, and ask if you can help with anything! Let’s bring back community, township, and caring!!
